There are some rumours that have circulated the internet that try to explain why Selina is haunting Kirby Road. Many of these stories are connected to another supposed haunting on this road that involves a house and barn now known as the "Hell House" and rumoured to hold KKK meetings in the past. Some accounts say that the father of this household went crazy and killed his whole family. Others go as far as to say Selina was his daughter who he killed because she began dating a black man. If the above article is not enough to prove this theory totally wrong, I found this fairly recent Church bulletin in which a mass is dedicated to Selina on the 17th Anniversary of her death. Clearly, Selina still has a family who loves her and clearly this family is Catholic. The KKK and Catholics don't typically get along.
It seems if Selina Degasperis really is haunting Kirby Road, her story is not as interesting as some people would hope. But in an incredibly shocking turn of events to me, I was able to learn this story. You see, after finding all of this fascinating information on this haunted road and the ghost who inhabits it, I happened to begin telling my mother the story. Before I could finish the story about Selina who got into a car accident on Kirby Road, she interrupted me with "Selina? Selina Degasperis?" My mother knew her name. Evidently my mother, and my father, went to her funeral. It may be a bit stereotypical to say that all Italians who frequent Woodbridge know each other but this appears to be the case here. My uncle owns a plumbing company (I know. The stereotypes are getting worse, aren't they?) and apparently, was quite close with Selina's father who owned a company in a similar field. According to my mother, the girls in the car were all travelling to school and Selina, who had just ironed her school uniform that morning, did not want to ruin her freshly pressed outfit with a seatbelt. The consequences of that choice are clear
There are still many mysteries though. Why did this seemingly normal family put such an odd tombstone at what appears to be the place of Selina's death? Though it may be common to have some sort of roadside memorial, it is usually in the form of a bouquet of flowers or something more... subtle, and frankly, less expensive than a tombstone. What does the "I'm a cute kid" refer to? And are all accounts of seeing this young teenage girl in the area simply fabrications or does Selina Degasperis have some reason to stick around Kirby Road that we're missing. One thing is clear. Selina is not burried at that Kirby Road site, according to her obituary:
I plan to visit Queen of Heaven Cemetary the next time I visit Kirby Road. I have tried to find Selina's family to see what they think of these stories but so far, have had no luck. I also plan to see if I can find Selina's funeral card, as my parents have the odd habit of keeping these sorts of things. For these, and perhaps even some unexpected discoveries... stay tuned.
